An Atlantic City man has pleaded guilty to the aggravated sexual assault of an 8 year-old boy, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill announced. Deandre Johnson, 24, pleaded guilty to first degree Aggravated Sexual Assault on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021, before Judge Donna Taylor. During the plea hearing, Johnson admitted to performing a sexual act on the boy in December 2018. Johnson must serve the entire 15 year sentence in a New Jersey state prison without parole. Johnson is also subject to registering with Megan’s Law and he will be subject to parole supervision for life as part of his guilty plea. Johnson was detained and has been in custody at the Atlantic County Justice Facility since Jan. 2, 2019.

Atlantic County has reported finding a mosquito sample in Somers Point that has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first confirmed positive mosquito sample found in Atlantic County this year.
Representatives from the Atlantic County Office of Mosquito Control collected the sample last week from Meyran Avenue in Somers Point and it was confirmed positive for West Nile virus on August 2. County public health and mosquito control officials are conducting mosquito surveillance, implementing additional control measures and providing educational materials to area residents and businesses. There are no reported human cases of the virus at this time, according to county health officials.
The Star Press reports Bally’s and Ocean Casino Resort are looking to build seasonal beach bars and permanent entertainment venues between the dunes and the Boardwalk in front of their properties. Two resolutions were approved allowing for each casino to begin negotiating redevelopment agreements. Bally’s beach bar and entertainment venue would reportedly be developed on beach lots 26, 27 and 28 between Arkansas and Indiana avenues. Council also approved a resolution for the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority to recognize a redevelopment plan at Ocean Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.
Atlantic County residents and community stakeholders are encouraged to ask questions, share comments and offer suggestions regarding the Atlantic County Hazard Mitigation Plan as the county and its municipalities work to update the plan and promote disaster-resistance and community resiliency. The county has received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cover the costs of these updates. Once finalized, the updated plan is expected to be reapproved by FEMA and adopted by participating communities in 2022. Each of the county’s 23 municipalities has agreed to participate in a multi-jurisdictional approach. Hazard mitigation is essential to reducing the long-term risks associated with natural disasters, including property loss, loss of life, economic hardship, and threats to public health and safety.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help as they look for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 61-year-old woman in Egg Harbor Township last week. Star Wardell, 61, of Egg Harbor Township, was crossing Washington Avenue just after midnight when she was hit. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Investigations Unit and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department are investigating a crash where a vehicle left the scene after a female pedestrian was struck and killed. On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at 12:02 A.M., Star Wardell, 61, of Egg Harbor Township was crossing Washington Avenue in Egg Harbor Township when she was struck and killed by a vehicle. The vehicle involved in the crash fled the area and was not located on scene when police arrived. Anyone with information should reach out to authorities.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating a shooting in Atlantic City early Sunday morning that left one man dead. Just after 3:00 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021, investigators of the ACPO Major Crimes Unit responded to Atlantic City in the area of California and Arctic Avenues for a report of a homicide. Atlantic City Police officers located a 42 year-old man at the scene who had been fatally shot. This is an active investigation by the ACPO Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department.
