Strathmere Pilings Project An Expensive Proposition

The cost of removing old pilings from the beaches in the Strathmere section of Upper Township is going up. The Cape May County Herald reports the township was given an estimate requiring an additional $150,000 to remove pilings exposed due to severe erosion and strong wave action. The township is paying 25% of the state Department of Environmental Protection’s share of the project. Upper Township had already cut a check for $33,700, when additional pilings were found in eight more locations. The new estimate for clearing out all the areas would be more than $700,000.
