A skunk collected from the 6500 block of Mill Road in Egg Harbor Township has been confirmed positive for rabies, the third rabies case of the year in Atlantic County.
Rabies was previously confirmed in a raccoon in Absecon and a skunk in Galloway.
The Atlantic County Division of Public Health was notified by local animal control officials of a skunk that had been involved in a confrontation with a pet dog. The animal was sent to the state lab for testing where it was confirmed positive for rabies on December 16..
An investigation by the Division of Public Health found no known human exposures. As a safety precaution, the dog, that was current on its rabies vaccination and booster, was placed on a 45-day informal confinement.
