A Middle Township man is handed 28 years behind bars in connection with a fatal stabbing two years ago. 53 year old Herbert Tozer was sentenced in the death of Robert Niemezura at a motel. He had been indicated in March of 2017 on murder, aggravated assault and additional charges.
We told you recently about a Middle Township High School in trouble for a racially charged photo posted on Facebook. That student has now issued an apology letter which reads, in part, “When the picture was taken I was not thinking about racism or hate toward any person or group, I was trying to look cool. I now truly understand the gravity of my actions and how enormously offensive they were.” Both the girl in the picture and another who took it have been disciplined.
Mystery continues to swirl around the company that will take over the Ocean Resort Casino. There is no record of a transaction with the county clerk’s office, but it can take up to two weeks for something to be posted in such a situation. It was just over a week ago that the current owner announced he would maintaining a non-controlling ownership, but that an outside company was entering the picture to assume majority ownership.
New Jersey lawmakers advanced legislation requiring independent expenditure committees to disclose their donors. The Democrat-led Senate Budget Committee advanced the bipartisan bill on Thursday. The measure requires advocacy groups that seek to influence elections to disclose where their donations come from.Election Law Enforcement Commission executive director Jeff Brindle testified that such donations have mushroomed in recent years.
The agency that attracts and arranges group conventions and meetings in Atlantic City says that the past year was a successful one. Jim Wood of Meet AC says they booked almost $400 million in conventions and meetings in 2018, almost 372,000 hotel rooms nights. Wood says, on average, a convention-goer here spends about $950 during their stay. Wood said Atlantic City is attractive because it has 18,000 hotel rooms and a convention center with a 500,000-square-foot hall and 40 breakout rooms. MeetAC is funded by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.
March 8th is the sentencing date for a Pleasantville man facing up to seven years behind bars after pleading guilty to prostitution and weapons charges. 42 year old Henry Lovest copped a plea to to promoting prostitution and weapons counts. Police say Lovest forced women to engage in prostitution using violent threats or for drugs. He then forced them to turn over all the money they make, to him.
The head of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber has concerns about an agreement reached by legislative Democrats to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. Joe Kelly telling the Press of Atlantic City that while the chamber feels workers should be paid a fair wage, it’s against any initiative that results in businesses having to reduce staff, hours or benefits.The legislation would introduce salary steps to the equation, resulting with a $15 minimum wage by 2024.
35 years ago this week, 7 year old Cary Grant Jr. was murdered in Atlantic City, his body found in an abandoned lot on the 100 block of North California Avenue. Despite the best efforts of law enforcement, the case remains unsolved. Despite all the time that has gone by, prosecutors say they continue to work on the case and will in order to give the Grant family closure. The spot where the young boy’s body was found, was just two blocks from his house.
The Parish of St. Monica in Atlantic City is offering up free affordable home ownership classes which start next week. Topics to be covered include mortgage qualifying and the process, budgeting, the importance of a good credit history, developing alternative credit and understanding responsible home ownership. Participants will hear from Credit Counselors, Attornies Loan officers, Realtors and Utility company reps. The first class is 6 to 8pm on January 24th and classes continue each of the next six Thusdays, wrappingup on March 7th. They take place at Quaremba Hall at St. Michael on Mississippi Avenue.
