Before North Wildwood can address expansive shore protection issues that date back a decade, the Jersey Shore town has a more immediate problem. NJ.com reports near the 15th Avenue section of the beach, a breach — the result of recent rough waves from severe weather including the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia — stretches to between 100 and 150 feet. And at high tide, the ocean water is not far off from homes, businesses and power lines. The city is dedicating about $300,000 to plug in the hole with a “temporary dune” after the work was approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection last week. It comes less than a month after the municipality spent another $400,000 of taxpayer money on a steel structure to surround and protect its beach patrol headquarters.
