ACPO Collaborates In New Special Needs Law Enforcement Training Program

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, in partnership with Atlantic City Police Department
and Atlantic County Special Services School District, has developed training for law
enforcement to facilitate better outcomes when responding to situations in which the community
member has special needs and/or mental health needs. The Recognition and Response Training
is designed to help officers recognize the signs and behaviors of people with disabilities, with a
high focus on the Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The training will provide tools and strategies for officers to better prepare them to respond in a
safe and effective manner. Each training session will include a law enforcement representative
as well as a Special Educator on the instructional team.
