A feral cat that appeared ill and was taken in by a homeowner in the 100 block of Bayview Avenue in Pleasantville, has been confirmed for rabies, the third case of the viral disease in Atlantic County this year. The cat was collected from the home by an animal control officer on March 8 and sent to the state lab for testing where it was found positive for rabies on March 14.
An investigation by the Atlantic County Division of Public Health found five other cats in the home that may have been exposed in addition to the homeowner who sustained a bite. The cats have been placed under an informal confinement period and the homeowner is receiving post exposure rabies treatment.
