Cape May City Council on Tuesday approved payment of a $25,500 bill for the removal of a derelict fishing boat from Cape May Harbor. “Nobody likes to see $25,000 show up on a bill. But the alternative is much worse,” city attorney Christopher Gillin-Schwartz said at the council meeting. In July, a crew from Sea Tow had beached the vessel so the fuel could be removed and repairs made.If the 40-foot vessel had been left in the water, it would have become a hazard to navigation. Also, the diesel fuel on board would eventually have ended up in the harbor, creating a much tougher cleanup.
