A judge will determine Sept. 16 whether a special election for Atlantic City’s 5th Ward council seat will go on as scheduled. The seat was ordered vacant last week when it was determined Councilman Muhammad Zia didn’t live in the resort at the time of last year’s election. The Press of Atlantic City reports Zia, his Republican opponent, Maria Lacca, and their attorneys were back before Judge Michael Blee Thursday morning for a case management conference to determine what the next steps were going to be following Blee’s ruling. Blee determined last week that Zia didn’t have a certificate of occupancy for a home on North Brighton Avenue and may have been living in Egg Harbor Township, making him ineligible to hold public office in Atlantic City.
