New Jersey is giving $1 million to local towns to pay for extra police patrols to crack down on distracted driving, including motorists who use cellphones while operating a vehicle.Among them are Atlantic City, Absecon, and Egg Harbor. The state Division of Highway Traffic Safety on Monday announced the launch of a high-visibility enforcement effort to reduce distracted driving. The campaign, known as “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” runs from April 1 to 30. It provides funding for law enforcement agencies throughout the state to bolster enforcement of laws prohibiting texting and other forms of distracted driving.
