Plans for the replacement of deteriorated toll bridges along Ocean Drive are “going very well,” engineer Bob Church reported to the Cape May County Board of Commissioners last week.The bridges connecting Cape May County’s barrier islands make up a scenic drive running the length of the county. But the tolls collected at the bridges are nowhere close to enough money to maintain them, and the southernmost bridge, the Middle Thorofare Bridge between the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township and the Garden State Parkway, needs to be replaced, county officials have said for years.
