After more than a decade of planning, setbacks, and partial improvements, Atlantic City officials say work may finally be coming to an end on the Baltic Avenue Canal, a century-old flood control system long criticized for failing to prevent nuisance flooding. The Press of Atlantic City reports in August, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution to accept a $5 million FEMA grant for the project. Meanwhile, construction is ongoing at the Baltic pump station, which is part of a larger round of work that is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The city has spent the past decade restoring the canal to reduce flooding during high tides and storms.
