Police charged a Vineland man with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car to avoid hitting a deer. Osvaldo Mercado Jr., 39, also was charged with reckless driving following the crash early Friday, police said in a news release. The crash happened near East Garden Road and Northeast Boulevard. Mercado told officers he crashed into a utility pole to avoid hitting a deer in the road, police said Tuesday.
