Avalon Lifeguards Sue Over Lack Of Pension Eligibility

A group of veteran lifeguards has sued the borough, asking a Superior Court judge to rule that Avalon is in violation of state law for not offering pensions to eligible guards upon retirement. According to the Cape May County Herald, the suit was filed following months of unsuccessful negotiations between the six plaintiffs, all Avalon Beach Patrol lieutenants, and borough officials. The lieutenants claim they are eligible for pensions, but Avalon, they say, takes the position that the pension law does not apply to the borough. Avalon, which has not yet filed a response to the suit, declined to comment.
